It is quite amazing how the ability of your mind can comprehend and perceive slight differences in spelling that many others usually don’t recognize. English grammar is very interesting in its nature. A language that has evidently prevailed in connecting the world together in a frequency way faster than Arabic language but ONLY during the technology age. So how is it that this happened?

How is it that English language with only 26 letters has prevailed more than Arabic language, 28 letters, in connecting the world in a faster rate?

The History

English language started at around the same time the Arabic language had started spreading.

  • English language             Three Germanic tribes actually invaded Britain during the 5th century AD and these tribes were the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. They had crossed the North Sea from what today is where Denmark and northern Germany are.
  • Arabic Language                Whereas in the 6th century, the Arab Conquests who were also known as Arab conquests or Islamic conquests carried the speakers of various Arabic dialects, with their religion “Islam” and their own language of Arabic spreading it into the Arabian Peninsula and almost all of the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is at the least 1,500 years old. Classical Arabic had only started in the 6th century but the earlier versions of the language already existed from the Safaitic dialect (quite used by the pre-Islamic nomadic inhabitants of the Syro-Arabian desert) which some of its discovered inscriptions dated back to the 1st Century.

Current Era

And here we are centuries later communicating and connecting our continents through the mediums created by the advancement of English language to the level of binary language and coding.

Imagine if there was no English language at all, would you be sitting there reading this from your cellphone or computer? Was the Arabic language or numbers going to create this kind of technology? I will leave that for my readers to wonder

Now let us go back to the main topic of this article “the power of words and spellings of the English language”. One would wonder what i meant by this or even why i would choose such topic in particular; well the reason is that even though many of us know how to read and write English, we still make mistakes in spelling and grammar that seem to be right at first. We have written and read our content to revise and check for those mistakes that can eliminate the purposeful meaning of our sentences. Sentences which we put together in order to communicate our thoughts and/or opinions in a clear and well-perceived manner.

Any minor differences in the letters which form English sentences will definitely set the tone of the message communicated to be less admired or even disregarded at times. This is always true in the formal environments of communication where the information exchange should always be clear, precise and accurate.

The backbone of English language is indeed its Grammar, it is the system and structure that consists of all the elements and tools needed to establish proper knowledge. Without the syntax, morphology (including inflections), phonology and semantics which all come together to form the grammar of English, It would almost be impossible to create even phrases, let alone construct any kind of communication.

The following are examples of words that are sometimes confusing in spelling and change their meanings accordingly:

  • licence vs license
  • Of course vs Of coarse
  • Your vs You`re
